Data, Not Distance, Is Driving Change in Apparel Sourcing

The shift toward nearshoring in apparel sourcing is increasingly driven by limited supply chain visibility rather than geography. Brands are moving production closer to home not because distant markets lack capability, but because they lack real-time, reliable data.

Across the Asia-Pacific, manufacturers face growing pressure as buyers prioritize transparency, accuracy, and risk reduction. The emerging perception is clear: distant supply chains are harder to monitor and manage.

Data Signals a Structural Shift

According to McKinsey & Company, 71% of sourcing executives plan to increase nearshoring. Reports from Business of Fashion indicate a steady rise in sourcing from nearshore regions by 2030.

At the same time, rising trade restrictions, freight volatility, and cost pressures are squeezing margins for manufacturers in Bangladesh, Vietnam, and India.

The Real Problem: Lack of Visibility

Nearshoring creates a perception of control, but the core issue is data gaps. When brands cannot verify production and shipment details in real time, distance becomes a risk.

Traditional tracking systems deliver only 60–75% inventory accuracy. RFID-based systems reveal hidden inefficiencies, including 2–10% mispack rates—costly in a high freight-cost environment.

Digital Solutions as a Competitive Advantage

Factories that invest in RFID and real-time data systems can close this gap. These technologies enable:

  • Item-level tracking
  • Verified shipments before dispatch
  • Reduced errors and delays

Deployments show up to 95% shipment accuracy and significantly lower chargebacks.

As noted by Mandy Leung, factories today must be “data-competitive,” not just cost-competitive.

Nearshoring Does Not Fix the Issue

Proximity alone does not solve visibility challenges. Factories without digital systems—regardless of location—still create blind spots in the supply chain.

The sourcing decision is no longer about distance. It is about data.

Factories that provide real-time, verifiable shipment information can reduce risk, build trust, and remain globally competitive—regardless of geography.
