BEPZA Plans New EPZs in Rangpur and Sirajganj to Boost Industrialisation

Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority is planning to establish two new export processing zones (EPZs) in Rangpur and Sirajganj to expand industrialisation in the northern region and promote sustainable energy use.

The initiative builds on the success of existing EPZs, with eight currently operational alongside ongoing developments in Jashore and Patuakhali. Once implemented, the new zones are expected to enhance regional industrial distribution and create significant employment opportunities.

Officials said around 450 acres of land in Rangpur have already been allocated for the project, with the potential to generate over 100,000 jobs. The move aligns with BEPZA’s broader strategy to attract domestic and foreign investment while supporting export diversification.

Since its establishment, BEPZA has played a key role in Bangladesh’s economic growth, contributing approximately 15–20% of the country’s total exports annually. Over the past four decades, it has attracted more than $7 billion in investment and generated exports exceeding $125 billion.

Beyond the readymade garment sector, EPZs now support a diversified industrial base, including electronics, automotive parts, footwear, and bicycles, reflecting a shift towards broader manufacturing capabilities.

The expansion also follows progress at the BEPZA Economic Zone in Chattogram, which has already begun exports and continues to attract strong investor interest.

Industry observers say the planned EPZs could further strengthen Bangladesh’s position as a competitive manufacturing hub while supporting inclusive growth and regional development.
