Tensions flared at a high-level pre-budget consultative meeting after key ministers left midway, prompting strong reactions from business leaders.
The meeting, jointly organised by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), is regarded as one of the most important platforms for dialogue between the government and private sector ahead of the national budget.
Discontent arose shortly after the session began when it was announced that Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir would leave early to attend a parliamentary session.
The announcement triggered immediate protests from business leaders, who questioned the government’s commitment to engaging with the private sector.
Imran Ahmed, president of the Bangladesh Restaurant Owners’ Association, criticised the move, calling it a sign of neglect.
“You called the businessmen, and now, just after the meeting started, you are saying that the ministers will leave. Why hold the event today?” he said, drawing support from others present.
He also raised concerns over the role of bureaucrats in leading business bodies, questioning the structure of representation in organisations like FBCCI.
Responding to the backlash, Minister Muktadir said the ministers were scheduled to attend another major programme involving local and foreign investors as well as garment sector leaders.
The incident underscores growing frustration among business stakeholders, who are seeking more consistent and meaningful engagement with policymakers amid mounting economic challenges.
