Employers Push for Changes as Government Reopens Labour Law Debate

The government is considering further amendments to the Labour Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 less than two months after it was issued, following objections from employers’ organisations. The Ministry of Labour and Employment had scheduled a Tripartite Consultative Council (TCC) meeting to discuss revisions, but it was postponed citing unavoidable reasons.

While labour leaders welcomed reforms such as allowing trade unions with the consent of 20 workers, major employers’ bodies—including BGMEA, BKMEA, and BTMA—rejected the ordinance. The Bangladesh Employers’ Federation also flagged several inconsistencies, warning of legal action if the law is not revised.

Labour leaders say the law has faced no implementation problems so far and question the need for early changes. Labour Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain said the issue would be discussed at a future TCC meeting.
