US cuts tariff on Bangladeshi exports to 19% under new trade deal

The United States has reduced its reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi exports to 19 percent from 20 percent after the two countries signed a new bilateral trade agreement aimed at strengthening economic cooperation.

Under the agreement, around 2,500 Bangladeshi products will receive duty-free or reduced-duty access to the US market. In return, Bangladesh will extend similar benefits to approximately 4,400 American products, with broader duty-free access to be phased in over the next decade.

Garments made from US cotton, pharmaceuticals, fisheries products and selected manufactured goods will enjoy zero-duty access.

The deal was signed by Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin and National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman for Bangladesh, and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer for the United States.

The agreement follows earlier tariff adjustments, including a 37 percent reciprocal tariff imposed last year, which was later reduced to 20 percent before the latest cut to 19 percent.

Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $12.4 billion in 2024, according to US data.
