Bangladesh Seeks Duty Benefits for U.S. Cotton-Based Garments

The Ambassador of the United States to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, visited the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Complex in Uttara on Sunday and held a meeting with BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan and members of the BGMEA Board of Directors.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. Key issues included potential U.S. investment in Bangladesh’s energy sector, labour-related matters, tariff policies, and opportunities to expand trade and investment partnerships.

BGMEA leaders also sought clarification on the mechanism for duty concessions on garments manufactured using U.S. cotton. The ambassador noted that the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is currently working on the matter and described the recent trade arrangement as a positive development for Bangladesh. He added that Bangladesh is the first country to receive such a special opportunity.

The garment industry representatives highlighted the need for increased U.S. investment in Bangladesh’s energy sector, particularly in LNG infrastructure and domestic gas exploration, to support the country’s fast-growing industrial base.

The meeting also discussed labour reforms, the proposed labour ordinance, visa facilitation for garment entrepreneurs, and initiatives related to sustainable manufacturing in the apparel sector.
