Two More Chattogram Yards Achieve Green Certification, Total Reaches 25

Two ship recycling yards in Chattogram have received green yard certification, bringing the total number of certified facilities in Bangladesh to 25, according to the Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board.

The newly certified yards—NB Steel of KR Group and Arab Ship Breaking and Recycling Limited of NR Group—were awarded Statements of Compliance by ClassNK on 18 March.

With this, seven Bangladeshi yards are now certified by ClassNK, joining facilities such as PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industry and Kabir Ship Recycling.

A green yard certification confirms compliance with the Hong Kong Convention, which sets standards for safe and environmentally sound ship recycling.

Industry experts say such certifications are increasingly essential for attracting global shipowners, who now prioritize environmental protection and worker safety.

Officials from both companies highlighted investments in modern equipment, automation, and worker training to meet international standards. Arab Ship Breaking and Recycling Limited alone invested over Tk70 crore to upgrade its facilities.

Bangladesh now has certified yards under multiple classification bodies, including ClassNK, ClassIR, and Bureau Veritas.

The growing number of certified yards signals a positive shift in Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector toward safer, cleaner, and globally compliant operations.
