Kintra Fibers Expands Biodegradable Textile Materials with Selenis

Selenis has entered a manufacturing partnership with material science company Kintra Fibers to scale production of fibre-grade polybutylene succinate (PBS), a 100% bio-based and biodegradable material designed for textile applications.

The collaboration will leverage Selenis’s large-scale polymerisation and specialty polyester capabilities to support the commercial production of Kintra’s PBS resin, enabling wider adoption of sustainable fibre alternatives in the global textile industry.

The initiative is being advanced through Selenis’s sustainability-focused division Texnascis, which focuses on recycling and circular textile solutions.

Kintra’s PBS material is engineered as a drop-in compatible alternative for existing fibre manufacturing systems, including PET-based processes, allowing easier integration into current textile supply chains. It can be processed into FDY, ATY, and DTY formats, supporting diverse knit and woven applications.

Industry stakeholders note that global synthetic fibre production exceeds 90 million tonnes annually, highlighting significant potential for scalable bio-based alternatives to reduce reliance on petroleum-derived materials.

Through this partnership, both companies aim to provide apparel brands and textile manufacturers with high-performance fibres that combine biodegradability, scalability, and industrial compatibility.
