MCCI Urges Cut in Turnover Tax to Ease Business Pressure

The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has urged the government to reduce turnover tax to 0.3% from 1%, citing rising business costs and inefficiencies in the current tax system.

At a pre-budget seminar for FY2026–27 in Dhaka, MCCI highlighted that mismatches between tax deducted at source (TDS), gross receipt taxes, and corporate tax liabilities are increasing compliance costs, straining cash flow, and creating risks of double taxation.

The chamber also proposed:

  • Setting TDS on exports at 0.50% to boost competitiveness
  • Reducing import-stage tax to 3% from 5% to lower input costs
  • Introducing a flexible 1–3% TDS on domestic supply

MCCI President Kamran T Rahman said businesses—especially SMEs—are under pressure from inflation, high interest rates, and forex constraints, calling for a business-friendly budget to support investment and economic stability.
