The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Industrial Development and Engineering Company (BIDEC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote a locally developed technology that converts conventional capacitor-type ceiling fans into energy-efficient BLDC fans.
The initiative aims to help Bangladesh’s garment factories reduce electricity consumption, lower operating costs and advance decarbonisation efforts.
Under the agreement, BGMEA member factories will receive access to BIDEC’s patented fan-upcycling technology at special pricing, supported by a five-year guarantee.
BGMEA said trials conducted across more than 42 factories showed efficiency improvements of approximately 47%–65%, strengthening confidence in the technology’s industrial potential.
Based on observed energy savings, the investment could potentially achieve a 1.5–2-year payback period, depending on individual factory operations and electricity consumption.
BGMEA Vice President Vidiya Amrit Khan said the initiative demonstrates how local innovation and entrepreneurship can address real industrial challenges while supporting energy optimisation and decarbonisation.
The partnership comes as Bangladesh’s RMG sector faces continued energy and electricity pressures alongside growing demands from international buyers for more sustainable production.
By scaling energy-efficient technologies across factories, the initiative could help improve industrial competitiveness, energy security and environmental performance while encouraging greater adoption of locally developed sustainable technologies.
