Bangladesh Moves to Protect Export Sector with WTO Transition Plan

Bangladesh is preparing to request a 12-year transition period at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to manage the economic impact of graduating from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. The proposal will be presented at the WTO Ministerial Conference scheduled for March.

The government aims to retain LDC-related trade benefits during the transition to protect export competitiveness and employment. Officials noted that the export sector, valued at around $50 billion, remains highly dependent on preferential market access.

The ready-made garment sector, which accounts for over 80% of total exports, could face higher tariffs in key markets such as the European Union and Canada if existing benefits expire abruptly. Bangladesh will also seek continued Duty-Free Quota-Free access and flexibility in Rules of Origin requirements.

The initiative focuses on ensuring a smooth post-LDC transition without disrupting exports or jobs.
