BB unveils policy support for large industrial groups to sustain production and jobs

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has announced policy support measures for the country’s major industrial and business conglomerates to help maintain economic stability, safeguard employment and ensure uninterrupted production amid temporary financial challenges.

Speaking to reporters at the central bank on Sunday, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the regulator would provide necessary policy assistance to strategically important industrial groups to prevent short-term financial difficulties from disrupting business operations or affecting the supply of goods and services.

He said large industrial conglomerates play a critical role in Bangladesh’s economy due to their significant contribution to employment, banking sector exposure and overall industrial output. Consequently, if any major company encounters temporary financial distress, the central bank will take appropriate steps to prevent broader economic repercussions.

As part of the support framework, Bangladesh Bank will facilitate coordination among lending banks, allow loan restructuring where justified, provide regulatory assistance and take necessary measures to ensure production activities continue without disruption.

The central bank clarified that the initiative is not intended to offer preferential treatment to individual companies. Instead, the objective is to preserve financial sector stability, protect jobs and maintain the uninterrupted supply of essential goods and services across the economy.

Bangladesh Bank added that policy support for economically significant industrial groups would remain available whenever necessary to mitigate systemic risks and sustain economic activity.

Economists have welcomed the move, saying it sends a positive signal at a time when businesses are grappling with higher production costs, intensifying global competition and mounting pressure in export markets.

They noted that targeted regulatory support for strategically important industries could help strengthen business confidence, sustain industrial production and reinforce Bangladesh’s broader economic resilience.
