BGMEA, OCAB Launch Joint Initiative to Attract Chinese Investment into Bangladesh’s RMG Sector

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has launched a new initiative with the Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh (OCAB) to attract greater Chinese investment into Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector, with a focus on strengthening backward linkage industries, encouraging joint ventures, and reviving struggling factories.

The initiative was discussed during a bilateral meeting at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka, where leaders from both organizations explored opportunities for investment, technology transfer, and strategic business partnerships between Chinese investors and Bangladeshi manufacturers.

The BGMEA delegation was led by President Mahmud Hasan Khan, while the OCAB delegation included Vice President Lisa Lou, Vice President and Secretary General Vivian Huang, Executive Director Steven Zhang, and Secretary Tina Hu.

During the meeting, the Chinese delegation highlighted the importance of increased foreign investment in modernizing Bangladesh’s upstream textile and garment supply chain. They noted that many Chinese companies are interested in establishing factories, transferring advanced technologies, and expanding operations in Bangladesh but require reliable investment information and local business connections.

In response, BGMEA announced that it will collect investment-related information from its member factories to identify businesses seeking foreign capital or strategic partnerships. Interested factory owners will be invited to submit details regarding their production capacity, factory size, available space, machinery, operational status, and preferred investment model, including full or partial ownership transfers and joint ventures.

BGMEA will evaluate the submitted information and share relevant profiles with OCAB to facilitate direct matchmaking between Chinese investors and Bangladeshi manufacturers.

According to BGMEA, the joint initiative aims to establish a one-stop investment matchmaking platform that will simplify investment partnerships, help reopen financially distressed or closed factories through fresh capital and technology, strengthen Bangladesh’s backward linkage industries, and accelerate the production of higher value-added apparel products.

The initiative is expected to deepen Bangladesh-China industrial cooperation while enhancing the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector.
