Square Textiles Launches 5.83 MW Rooftop Solar Plant in Gazipur

Square Textiles PLC has strengthened its commitment to sustainable industrial growth by inaugurating a 5.83-megawatt rooftop solar power system at its manufacturing facilities in Gazipur.

The project, officially launched on May 5, represents one of the notable renewable energy investments in Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector, reflecting the industry’s increasing transition toward low-carbon and energy-efficient manufacturing.

Supported by the governments of Germany and the World Bank Group, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to accelerate clean energy adoption across Bangladesh’s industrial landscape.

The rooftop solar installation is expected to generate renewable electricity directly for factory operations, reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based energy sources while enhancing long-term operational efficiency.

According to project stakeholders, the system will help reduce approximately 4,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The initiative comes amid growing pressure from international apparel brands and retailers, particularly in Europe and North America, for suppliers to meet stricter environmental and sustainability standards.

Officials from the German Embassy in Dhaka described the project as an important milestone in Bangladesh’s renewable energy transition and emphasised the role of public-private collaboration in promoting climate-friendly industrial development.

Representatives from the embassy, senior executives of Square Textiles, and development partners attended the inauguration ceremony.

The project also aligns with Bangladesh’s broader renewable energy goals as the country seeks to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on imported fuel.

Industry experts noted that rooftop solar systems are becoming increasingly important for export-oriented manufacturers facing rising energy costs and stricter global compliance requirements.

Earlier this year, Square Group, in collaboration with Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), celebrated the implementation of rooftop solar projects across its industrial units with a combined installed capacity of 7.51 MWp.

Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry, which accounts for the majority of the country’s export earnings, is increasingly investing in green technologies to strengthen global competitiveness.

Renewable energy adoption, energy-efficient manufacturing, and environmentally certified production facilities are now considered critical factors in attracting international buyers and ensuring long-term sustainability.

With the latest initiative, Square Textiles further positions itself among Bangladesh’s leading sustainability-focused textile manufacturers, demonstrating how renewable energy investments can support both environmental objectives and industrial competitiveness.
