The government has initiated plans to establish Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in Barishal and Lalmonirhat as part of a broader strategy to attract foreign investment, expand export capacity, and generate employment opportunities across the country.
The Cabinet Division has already instructed the Prime Minister’s Office and relevant authorities to begin implementation procedures for the proposed EPZ projects. The initiative follows recommendations made during the DC Conference held in May, where several deputy commissioners (DCs) emphasized the need for new EPZs and economic zones to accelerate regional economic development.
According to Cabinet Division officials, approximately 1,729 development proposals were submitted by districts nationwide. After multiple rounds of evaluation involving ministries and implementing agencies, a number of feasible proposals were selected and presented to the government for implementation.
As part of this process, the Prime Minister’s Office has approved six key development initiatives to be implemented in short-, medium-, and long-term phases. These include the establishment of EPZs in Barishal and Lalmonirhat, alongside economic zones in Gazipur, Barguna, and Pirojpur.
Officials said the concerned district administrations have been instructed to submit regular progress reports to ensure timely implementation of the projects.
Currently, Bangladesh operates eight government-owned EPZs under the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), including Dhaka, Chattogram, Mongla, Cumilla, Ishwardi, Karnaphuli, Adamjee, and Uttara EPZs. These zones play a vital role in facilitating duty-free import of raw materials and promoting export-oriented manufacturing.
The proposal for an EPZ in Barishal highlights the region’s direct road connectivity with Dhaka and strategic proximity to Payra Port. Authorities believe the project will create local employment opportunities, reduce migration to major cities, alleviate poverty, and improve living standards.
Similarly, the proposed EPZ in Lalmonirhat is expected to support industrialization in northern Bangladesh by leveraging the district’s strong agricultural base and transport infrastructure. The presence of Burimari Land Port and railway connectivity is expected to facilitate efficient import and export activities while encouraging agro-based industries.
In addition to the EPZ initiatives, proposed economic zones in Gazipur, Barguna, and Pirojpur aim to promote planned industrialization, attract domestic and foreign investment, improve environmental management, and enhance regional connectivity.
Officials said several ministries have already begun implementing this year’s priority decisions, while progress reports will be submitted to the Cabinet Division on a monthly basis.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring economic discipline and strengthening the investment climate. Addressing parliament, he said sustainable development requires a stable economic environment and highlighted ongoing reforms to simplify investment procedures and attract both domestic and foreign investors.
The prime minister also noted that the government is updating trade and investment policies and pursuing institutional reforms, including the integration of BIDA, BEZA, PPPA, and the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority into a unified framework to improve efficiency, streamline services, and reduce bureaucratic complexities for investors.
