Bangladesh is steadily expanding its footprint in high-value manufacturing as Japanese company ArtNature Bangladesh Limited produces premium customised wigs for international markets from its facility at the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone in Araihazar, Narayanganj.
The factory, located in the Japanese Economic Zone, combines advanced technology with skilled craftsmanship to manufacture personalised wigs that are exported primarily to Japan and Singapore. The products are designed to meet individual customer requirements, making them part of a niche, high-value segment of the global beauty and healthcare industry.
Customers visit ArtNature’s sales centres in Japan and Singapore, where their heads are digitally scanned using 3D technology. Based on the collected data, customised wigs are manufactured according to individual head dimensions, hair colour preferences and styling requirements.
ArtNature has invested approximately $14.4 million in its Bangladesh operation and plans to invest an additional $2 million this year as part of its expansion strategy.
Skilled Craftsmanship Meets Advanced Technology
The facility currently employs nearly 300 workers, the majority of whom are women. Around 200 employees work directly on the production floor, where each wig undergoes a meticulous manufacturing process involving seven to eight stages.
According to company officials, producing a single handcrafted wig can take several months, with workers requiring extensive training to master the highly detailed process of attaching hair strands and assembling customised products.
“We received around six months of training before starting production. Every handmade wig requires precision, patience and attention to detail,” said factory employee Sanjida Akter.
The company also employs research and development personnel and has introduced international-standard training programs supported by foreign specialists, including trainers from the Philippines.
Expansion Plans and Employment Opportunities
Factory General Manager Md. Tanvir Rahman said ArtNature currently operates as a 100% export-oriented manufacturer focused exclusively on customised hair wigs.
“We are planning to expand into raw fibre processing and diversify our operations in the future. We also see strong growth potential in Europe and the United States,” he said.
The factory has significant room for expansion, with more than half of its production space currently unused. The company plans to recruit approximately 800 additional workers in the coming years to support increased production capacity.
However, officials identified the shortage of skilled workers as one of the industry’s key challenges, requiring substantial investment in recruitment and training.
High-Value Export Potential
ArtNature’s products serve a wide range of consumers, including individuals experiencing hair loss and cancer patients seeking specialised hair solutions.
According to industry data, premium customised wigs command significantly higher prices than many traditional manufactured goods. Depending on design and specifications, ArtNature products can retail from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per unit in international markets.
The development highlights Bangladesh’s growing potential to diversify beyond conventional apparel exports and establish a presence in specialised, technology-driven manufacturing sectors.
Growing Global Market
The global hair wig and extension market continues to expand rapidly. According to market research estimates, the industry was valued at approximately $7.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $12.6 billion by 2034, driven by rising demand for fashion products, medical hair solutions and personalised beauty services.
Industry observers believe Bangladesh’s competitive labour force, improving industrial infrastructure and increasing foreign investment could position the country as an emerging manufacturing hub for high-value products such as customised wigs.
Officials from the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) have also emphasized the importance of skills development initiatives to support the growth of specialised industries and attract further foreign investment into the country’s economic zones.
