Muga Silk Exports and Tourism to Benefit from India’s New Mission Senehjori Program

India has launched Mission Senehjori, a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming Assam’s iconic Muga silk industry into a globally recognized luxury textile ecosystem while strengthening livelihoods across the value chain.

Unveiled by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the mission seeks to position Assam as a leading global hub for premium Muga silk production, branding, exports, and silk-based tourism.

The initiative will adopt a cluster-based approach across major Muga-producing districts, focusing on the entire value chain—from host-plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to reeling, weaving, digital traceability, branding, and international market development.

Recognized as the world’s only naturally golden silk and India’s first GI-tagged silk, Muga silk remains one of the country’s most distinctive textile products. Assam currently accounts for nearly 90% of global Muga silk production and supports around 260,000 rearer and weaver families.

Backed by an investment of approximately ₹396–411 crore ($46.6–48.4 million) over three years, Mission Senehjori aims to modernize production infrastructure, establish new reeling facilities, promote Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), expand GI-based authentication, and strengthen global market access under a unified Muga silk brand identity.

The program also targets higher income generation for silk producers, enhanced export competitiveness, and greater value addition across the sector. Key goals include developing modern reeling units, expanding digital traceability systems, regenerating host-plant ecosystems, and increasing international exports of Assam’s premium silk.

Alongside industrial development, the initiative will promote silk heritage tourism through projects such as a Muga Silk Trail, Silk Tourism Park, and annual Muga Utsav festivals, creating new opportunities for cultural and economic growth.

Industry stakeholders view the mission as a significant step toward elevating Assam’s traditional silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile industry while preserving its unique heritage and craftsmanship.
