Strong US Demand Boosts Bangladesh’s Denim Export Performance

Bangladesh’s denim industry continues to reinforce its position as a key pillar of the country’s export economy, demonstrating notable resilience despite ongoing global economic uncertainties.

As one of the world’s leading denim suppliers, Bangladesh has built a strong presence in major markets such as the United States and the European Union, supported by its ability to deliver high-quality products at competitive prices.

While overall ready-made garment (RMG) exports recorded a modest decline of around 3.7% in the early months of FY2025–26 due to fluctuating global demand, denim exports have emerged as a standout performer. Shipments to the United States have surged by more than 30%, reflecting sustained demand and reinforcing Bangladesh’s growing dominance in the global denim segment.

Industry stakeholders attribute this performance to the country’s expanding production capacity, skilled workforce, and continued investment in advanced manufacturing. Over the past decade, many local producers have upgraded facilities with state-of-the-art machinery and adopted environmentally sustainable processes, positioning Bangladesh as a preferred sourcing destination for global brands.

However, the sector continues to face structural challenges. Rising energy costs and intermittent power supply are affecting production efficiency, while increasingly stringent compliance requirements from international buyers are adding operational pressure on manufacturers.

Competition is also intensifying from regional players such as Vietnam and Türkiye, prompting Bangladeshi exporters to enhance value addition and strengthen their competitive edge.

Sustainability has become a central focus for the industry, as global buyers demand eco-friendly production practices, reduced water usage, lower chemical intensity, and greater supply chain transparency. In response, manufacturers are increasingly adopting advanced technologies such as laser finishing, ozone washing, and water-efficient dyeing systems, alongside digital solutions to improve traceability and operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, industry insiders believe Bangladesh has significant potential to move beyond volume-driven growth and position itself as a hub for high-value, sustainable denim production. Achieving this transition will require continued investment in automation, innovation, and workforce development, as well as supportive policy measures to address infrastructure and energy constraints.

Despite near-term headwinds, the long-term outlook for Bangladesh’s denim sector remains positive. With a strategic focus on sustainability, technology, and market diversification, the industry is well-positioned to strengthen its global footprint and drive the next phase of growth in apparel exports.
